What Does Veterans Day Mean To Me?

November 11, 2011 By Tracy

When my kids got home from school yesterday, we sat down and discussed what exactly Veterans Day is all about. I then asked my 5 year old to draw a picture and tell me what it meant to her. She drew the picture above, and told me that she is happy to be free because she really wants to be a vet (the animal kind) when she grows up.

My 9 year old wrote the following Thank You Note… (you can click to make it larger)

Now it’s my turn…

The definition of a Veteran is a person who has had long service or experience in a particular occupation or field such as the military. Well that is not exactly what I think of when I think of a Veteran. I’d describe a Veteran more like this… a person, who has sacrificed everything….everything…for me and my family. A hero, really. A hero is defined as a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. Now that sounds more like it! A hero.

So what does Veterans day mean to me? FREEDOM. Freedom that it seems I take for granted everyday, as I go about my busy life. So many Veterans and active members of the military actually give up their freedoms, to make sure that you and I have ours. My family and I will wake up together on Christmas morning, and every other morning for that matter, but I can’t help to think about those serving around the world that won’t actually have that freedom this year. Although I realize that these two little words that I am about to say really will never be enough, because freedom really isn’t free at all, it comes at a pretty high price…a price that our heroes are so unselfishly willing to pay. To all of you, my heroes, I say, “Thank You”!
